The Library recently acquired a second copy of Ross’s Narrative of a Second Voyage, 1835.  The copy on display for the exhibition was missing the Appendix (volume 2), and had only three plates in color.  Moreover, the three color plates were marred by type offset, so we had to reproduce monochrome plates in the catalog.

This new copy has nine colored plates in volume one, and eleven colored plates in the Appendix.  Moreover, the color plates are relatively unaffected by offsetting.

Ironically, the two monochrome plates we chose for the catalog are here presented in color; we reproduce the new versions for comparison.

We also reproduce two other plates; one records the first encounter of the crew of the Victory with the native Inuit of Boothia Felix (whom Ross called “Boothians), and the second offers a charming view of  a local Inuit “Snow Village.”
